Meaningful Losses

In kendo, we have a saying; There are mysterious victories but there are no mysterious losses. There are reasons why we lose in shiai. And we really have to learn from them.  I would like to share what I have learned from my losses in my recent shiai experience.

If you want to learn about seme in detail, I recommend “Interview with Alex Bennett“. This video helps you to understand what really seme is. This is something you really have to understand if you are going for 4-dan and up.

What does “If the course of your shinai is right, you cannot strike me” mean?

It simply means that we must use our shinai following the principle of katana.

Good Motodachi Techniques

You think striking is hard. Ohhhh, no! Receiving is harder. Good modotachi (receiver) can improve their fellow kendoists without them knowing it. We are not a hitting dummy. We should not just stand and wait for kakarite (striker) to hit us. We should control the distance and timing for them to strike. It is very important and responsible task.
