Roppon-Me: Kata No.6: Kote Suriage Kote

Shitachi executes Kote Suriage Kote against Uchitachi in this kata.

Tips:

  • Uchitachi lowers his sword straight when uchitachi starts lifting up his sword from gedan.
  • Uchitachi takes hidari- jodan stepping backwards onto the right foot when shitachi’s sword is just about to touch uchitachi’s sword.
  • In Kodachi No.2, shitachi should turn his sword when uchitachi starts lifting up his sword.
  • Shitachi takes hira-seigan when uchitachi takes hidari-jodan.
  • Uchitachi should execute kote so shitachi CAN execute a proper suriage technique. (Watch what happens at 1:38)
  • Keep the kensaki higher (when executing your kote), shitachi can execute a good suriage technique. *This kind of “careful consideration” to your partner is necessary.
  • Uchitashi’s Jop: He/she must create a situation where shitachi can execute his/her technique filled with a ki energy.
  • Bad: When executing your suriage technique, do not swing your sword sideways. (3:12)
  • Go straight towards uchitachi after you execute the kote after your suriage.
  • Uchitachi take a step backwards immediately after getting cut on his kote.
  • Bad: After uchitachi strikes kote, do NOT drop your sword down (4:00)
  • Confirm that shitachi cut your kote, then take a step backward.
  • Shitachi keeps his sword in the centre when pushing uchitachi backward when taking jodan.
  • Kata won’t be completed if uchitachi selfishly does kata without letting shitachi what they have to do properly.
