Yonhon-Me: Kata No.4: Tsuki Makikaeshi Men

Shitachi executes Tsuki Maki-kaeshi Men against Uchitachi in this kata.

Tips:

  • Hasso and Waki-Gamae
    Waki-Gamae (Left) and Hasso (Right)

Check how your Hasso looks like. Your right hand should be a little lower than your mouth and one fist away from your face. And the arm-pit should be a little open but not too wide.

Please make sure to WATCH Miyazaki sensei’s Hasso to learn how it looks like.

  • Keep your body straight toward your opponent in hasso.
  • Come straight down from hidari jodan. That means your hidari-jodan should be correct.
  • When taking waki-gamae, show that you’re taking hasso but pass the hasso position and go down to the waki-gamae position.
  • It is said that you take smaller steps forward when coming to the centre.
  • When coming down to the chudan, both should push each other. It is called shinogi wo gezuru (scraping the shinogi, the side of the sword)
  • If pushing each other correctly, uchitachi will naturally lose his/her balance on maki technique.
  • Do not drop the kensaki down when striking men.
  • When executing a men strike, it should be one motion.
